What’s the Difference Between Mental Health and Mental Health Disorders

Mental Health and Mental Illness might sound very similar, but they have clearly defined and important differences.

Mental Health

Mental health refers to the health of your mental state on a day-to-day basis. This will naturally change based on the environmental stimulus that you experience throughout the day. The World Health Organization defines someone who is mentally well as someone is secure in their potential, able to cope with typical stressors and makes helpful contributions to their community.

An individual can improve their mental well-being by making positive lifestyle adjustments and pursuing a sense of purpose in life. A person’s mental health can vary throughout their life, depending on outside factors. Mental illness does not bar someone from achieving good mental health. With proper support, anyone can improve their mental well-being.

Mental Illness

On the other hand, Mental Illnesses or Mental health disorders are diagnosable conditions that often require professional assistance to manage or treat. Mental Illnesses can be caused by factors like family genetics, altered brain chemistry, as well as physical, psychological, or emotional trauma. Anyone can develop a mental illness, regardless of age, socio-economic class, sex, or race.

Mental illnesses directly impact a person’s mental health by influencing a person’s emotions, cognitive ability, behavior or perception of the world around them. Different mental illnesses have different symptoms, which are best managed with professional medical assistance.
